Partner Research Centers
National and International Internships in Academia, Industry, Government, and Business. During the Summer after either the first or the second year of IGERT support, Trainees will participate in a academia, industry, government or business internship at a National or International partncr site.
The goals of these internships are three-fold: (i) to enhance the student technical training by placing them in an environment where they have access to unique expertise and equipment relevant to their dissertation theme (ii) to expose the students to a different institutional framework, helping them develop broader institutional awareness and valuable networking, (iii) to promote dissemination of research and educational accomplishments of the IGERT program by facilitating long-term collaborations with academic leaders across the Nation and the World. A list of over 50 recognized laboratories both in the US and overseas, have been identified as potential partner sites. Representative samples are listed in Table 1 (U.S. partner sites) and Table 2 (International Partner sites).

Coordination and Oversight of International Fellowships: Four to six International Fellowships per year will be selected for their potential for scientific progress and broadening of outlooks for IGERT fellows. In January of each year, the IGERT internship coordinator will send to International Partner Sites a description of IGERT research themes, requesting that in response, they develop a description of possible internship topics, identifying goals, instrumentation, and mentorship resources available for each topic. Opportunities will be matched to Trainees needs and interests. Subsequent dialogue involving the IGERT fellows, their advisors, and the potential internship supervisor will be facilitated to fine-tune goals. Upon completion of the internship, fellows will develop a structured report, evaluating the experience, resources, and mentorship available. The best performing sites will be given priority in subsequent years.
