The Department of Chemical
and Biochemical Engineering (CBE) at Rutgers is relatively young. Since
its inception in 1962, the department has become one of the fastest rising
chemical engineering programs in the nation (National Research Council (NRC)
report, 1995). Since the early 1990's, the department has grown tremendously,
adding twelve new faculty in strategic areas of importance, and has witnessed
over $6 million of spending on renovations and modernization. The departmental community is comprised of 80 graduate students, 10 postdoctoral fellows, 240 undergraduates, seven research faculty, several visiting professors, a large support staff, and 18 full-time faculty actively involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, performing leading-edge research, and publishing scientific papers and books. The high faculty-to-student ratio provides graduate students with ready accessibility to the faculty as well as active mentorship. In recent years, the
department has averaged 8 Ph.D. and 14 M.S. graduates per year. An active
part-time graduate program serves students from local industry in and
around the State of New Jersey. The part-time program enrolls about 20
students, representing a quarter of the total program. One-fifth of the
graduate student body is from abroad, with the balance comprised of U.S.
residents from more than 25 universities around the country. Women represent
over 40 percent of the graduate student body. Such diversity enhances
the quality of student life within the department. A synergy of research
focus areas in the department provides continuous opportunities for student-faculty
interactions. Graduate students also enjoy a great degree of flexibility
and opportunity for leadership in organizing a variety of social events
as well as professional research seminar series throughout the year.
